By law, South African parents are required to register their children for education (whether in school or at home) through their provincial Department of Education.
That’s the technical rule.
In reality, however, many provincial departments don’t yet have proper systems or understanding of home education.
They often request documents or conditions not required by law, which discourages parents.

At present, the government rarely enforces registration except in extreme cases, eg., if a child is reported as truant or neglected.
As long as you’re actively educating your child and can show evidence of learning (lesson plans, workbooks, progress), you are fulfilling your parental duty.
The key is documentation:
✅ Keep records of what your child learns.
✅ Keep copies of work or projects.
✅ Stay consistent — education must be continuous and intentional.
📝Exams and Certification — What Are Your Options?
South Africa does not require homeschooled children to write official government exams each year.
However, once learners reach the senior phase (grades 9–12), parents often explore:
1. Cambridge International or GED — global programs recognized for tertiary study.
2. Distance education providers such as Brainline, Impaq, or Teneo — accredited for the SA curriculum.
3. Private invigilation centres where children can sit for exams under supervision.
So, your child can earn recognized qualifications, but you decide which route fits your family’s goals.

Homeschooling isn’t easy. It’s deeply rewarding, but it tests your consistency, patience, and structure.
The biggest pitfalls?

• 😩 Unrealistic expectations: You don’t need to recreate a classroom — learning happens everywhere.

You don’t need to be a teacher.
