Sometimes the day you dread brings the breakthrough you need.
Working in a toxic environment has a way of making you anxious. Before COVID, like so many others, I had prayed — both consciously and subconsciously — “Why can’t I just work from home? I’m exhausted by the drama, the pettiness, the draining energy.”
The fake smiles, the corridor gossip, the favoritism, the cliques…it was exhausting. Jobs handed out to friends of friends, cliques hiding behind fake kindness, and whispers poisoning the workplace — it was a daily battle. Like many, I was burning out but trying to hold on.
Then COVID happened — and for me, it was a blessing in disguise.
I often reflected… “Be careful what you ask for, you might just get.” And I did. So, there I was, at home, working remotely, salary paid in full — something I never thought possible in my lifetime. And I thanked God every day, because none of my family fell ill. We were kept. We were covered.
I’m painfully aware it wasn’t this way for everyone. I have friends who lost multiple family members in a matter of weeks. My heart mourns for them. I witnessed both the blessing and the heartbreak that COVID brought.
Fast forward nearly four years… we were called back into the office.
“It’s only two days a week,” they said. But the anxiety returned. Colleagues whispered in the kitchen about panic attacks before office days. Our souls were heavy, our energy depleted… we were back in the matrix. I found myself asking every weekend, “Lord, must I really go back next week?”
And yet, I went…out of obligation. For the bills which needed to be paid and for the provider that I’d always been. For the commitments I’d made.
I realized something deeper: maybe the lesson wasn’t escape. Maybe the lesson was showing up differently. God hadn’t released me yet because there was purpose in my presence – where He had knowingly, deliberately planted me. “Shine/grow where you are planted”, they say.
Galations 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
I became the rose growing from concrete.
In that office, amidst all the negativity, I was known for my calm demeanour. Those drawn to me sought me out…for prayers…for advice… to help them interpret their dreams. I was unknowingly living the very purpose I had prayed for — to be a light, a helper, a prayer warrior.
Colleagues told me I had changed the atmosphere for them. They told me, “You help us see the silver lining when all we see are storm clouds.”
And I realized… God had already answered my prayer. I was already being used in the capacity I had asked for.
As I count down to retirement, not yet financially ready but deeply spiritually covered, I walk in faith. I walk knowing that my God goes before me. I don’t have all the answers…but I have the One who does.
Jeremiah 29:7 “Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
My Message to You Today:
If you’re stuck somewhere you hate… if you feel stuck in a job, in a season, in a holding pattern…trust there’s an assignment in it. You’re being sharpened, prepared, strengthened. Be the light in the darkness.
You are covered. You are seen. You are protected. You are loved.
I serve the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I serve Jesus, the Son of David. And the Holy Spirit — my Ruach — is with me every step of the way.
AFFIRMATION:
I may not be where I want to be, but I am planted for a purpose. I am growing, even in hard places. God is preparing my harvest.
